Updates:
Hello everyone.
There is still ten days to get your entry in for the Flash Fiction contest. There have been some great submissions already so it's going to be very hard to judge. If you're interested, you can find the rules further down this post.
On an unrelated note, the group did not receive any submissions for the Journal Showcase this month so I just thought I'd remind you of this feature.
Every month, members are free to send in a single piece of their work that they want constructive feedback on. I post a list of these in the Journal on the first of each month so that other members can read them and give their critique.
As we didn't receive any submissions for February, I'm going to leave the January submissions up for another month. You can find the list further down this post. If you have time to spare, please can you take a look at this? I'm sure the authors would be really grateful.
If you would like for a piece of your work to be listed on March 1st, please send a note to the group containing a link to it. You can only submit one item a month and it can be either a poem, a short story or the first chapter of a longer piece.

Flash Fiction Contest!
As I promised before Christmas, I am pleased to announce a new contest. As the last was open exclusively for the poets in our midst, this time all entries must be prose.
I'm also tightening the rules for this contest to make it more of a challenge so please pay careful attention to the rules below to avoid being disqualified.
1. The theme this time is Promise. Take that to mean however you wish - how you include this prompt in your work is entirely up to you.
2. You have exactly a month from today to submit your entries - submissions close at 12pm GMT on 12th February 2014 and then the judging will begin.
3. This is a Flash Fiction contest (a definition of this can be found here -www.writing-world.com/fiction/… - if you are unsure). Please note that structuring of Flash Fiction is very important. If you want to win, your piece will need to relate a complete story in a minimalist way.
4. All entries must aim to be 500 words in length. The challenge is to write a short story on a very small word limit. I will allow a 10% buffer (i.e. all entries must be between 450 and 550 words in length) but I will disqualify and entries that go under or over this limit.
5. Usual group rules still apply - i.e. no fan-fiction and flag your work if it contains mature themes.
6. Submissions must be made to the 'Contest Entry' folder in the gallery. Submissions made to any other folder will not be counted.
7. Only one submission per person please - make it your best work
8. The winner will be picked by myself after the end date - how soon after will depend on how many entries I have to read.
9. The winning piece will be displayed forever in our Featured Gallery for everyone to admire.
If you have any questions, please post below and I will be more than happy to answer. If not - may the odds be forever in your favor.

Villain Contest - Now Open!
Updates:
Hello everyone.
Firstly, I'm stopping running the critique service for a while as no one has submitted any work for this for a few months now. If any of you are interested in restarting this in the future, please let me know.
Secondly, I realised that it's been a while since our last contest so I thought it was about time we started a new one. As the rules of the last two contests have been fairly restrictive, I'm relaxing them a little bit for this one - let's just make it fun. For more information, read on!

Hi Everyone.
Apologies for the delay. I've read through the entries to the Flash Fiction contest and - although it was difficult - I have picked a winner.
Congratulations to SgtPossum (https://www.deviantart.com/sgtpossum) for their piece 'Emeralds in Ivory'. This has now been moved into our featured gallery where it will remain forever more.
Please don't be disheartened if you didn't win this time - there were lots of strong entries this time round. There will be more contests soon and so you'll have plenty more chances to win!
On a related note, if you have an idea for a contest (or would like to offer a prize for one beyond our standard 'space in the featured

It's going to be tough to pick just one winner but I will aim to read through all the entries over the next week and let you know when I've come to a decision.
If you want to read the entries yourself (and I strongly advise that you do), here they are:
